The Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman (CIS Ombudsman) is currently testing a new format for our DHS Form 7001, Request for Case Assistance, as well as new features for uploading documents and checking on the status of your request. Learn more about this new development.

What is the CIS Ombudsman’s Office?

The Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman (CIS Ombudsman) assists individuals and employers in resolving difficulties they are experiencing with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

It is an independent office within the Department of Homeland Security and is not part of USCIS. You can submit DHS Form 7001 online below to request their help.

What’s new?

The CIS Ombudsman recently announced improvements to the process of requesting assistance with your USCIS case. These changes, implemented on May 2nd, 2024, aim to make the system easier to navigate and provide a more user-friendly experience.

These changes were made in response to customer feedback, with the aim of making the process easier to understand and use for anyone seeking our help. For the next few weeks, the CIS Ombudsman will be closely monitoring the user experience of this form and the new features. It will not affect how they process your case once you submit your case assistance request. Users are invited to send feedback during this testing phase.

What's Changed?

  1. Simpler Online Form: The DHS Form 7001, used to request case assistance, now boasts a cleaner and more streamlined layout. Gone are the accordion sections, replaced by a straightforward design that simplifies information input.

  2. Enhanced Tracking: A progress tracker keeps you informed throughout the process. You'll receive alerts reminding you of important information to include.

  3. Document Uploads: A dedicated tab allows you to upload any supporting documents after submitting your request. No more scrambling to send them separately!

  4. Request Status Check: Concerned about the status of your case assistance request? A new tab lets you easily check its progress.

How to Get Started?

If you're experiencing delays or facing difficulties with your USCIS case, the CIS Ombudsman can be a valuable resource. Here's how to submit a request using the updated system:

  1. Head to the DHS website: Visit the Department of Homeland Security's website (https://www.dhs.gov/case-assistance) for the latest information on case assistance.

  2. Download the DHS Form 7001: The DHS website provides a downloadable version of the form, along with helpful tips for completing it.

  3. Submit Online: For the most efficient option, submit your completed form electronically through the USCIS website.

  4. Alternatively: If you cannot submit online, you can download the form, complete it, and email it to the CIS Ombudsman. This option is primarily for individuals located outside the US.

Remember: Before contacting the CIS Ombudsman, it's crucial to attempt resolving your issue directly with USCIS. Explore their available channels, such as the USCIS Contact Center or online e-Request system.

Gaining Traction

These improvements come in response to user feedback, demonstrating the CIS Ombudsman's commitment to providing a user-friendly and efficient system for those encountering challenges with their USCIS cases. With a clearer layout, document upload options, and progress tracking, the revamped request process empowers you to seek and receive the support you need during your immigration journey.
