What is the Form I-693?
Applicants for adjustment of status (the process of applying for permanent residence while in the United States, as opposed to consular processing, which is conducted at a U.S. Consulate abroad) must complete an immigration medical examination and all required vaccinations and submit a properly completed Form I-693 signed by a civil surgeon to show they are free from health conditions that would render them inadmissible under the health-related grounds.
What’s changed?
Previously, the applicant may submit the I-693 together with the Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, in response to a Request for Evidence from USCIS, or at the interview, if one were required. Now, USCIS requires applicants for adjustment of status to submit the I-693, with their Form I-485 or their green card application may otherwise be rejected.
Why is USCIS making this change?
According to the USCIS, they have made this change to reduce the number of Requests for Evidence issued before adjudicating a Form I-485. It is hoped that this new policy change will streamline the permanent residency application process and make for quicker processing and faster adjudication times.
